Moorfields Eye Hospital Estates Strategy

The world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital are moving to a state-of-the-art integrated campus (through a project known as Project Oriel) with their UCL partners the Institute of Ophthalmology. Capitec have supported the process of drafting the updated Estates Strategy at this most exciting time of the Trust’s development…

“This is not the first time Moorfields have moved wholesale in their 200-year history (one that is also steeped in leading innovation and world firsts!). It is however not easy to undertake world-class digitally enabled medicine (and advanced research) in a property designed now over a century ago.

The estates team must however maintain ‘business as usual’ at their main campus site whilst taking a highly proactive and leading role in the design and development of the new state-of-the-art site to ensure this will also champion condition-based maintenance approaches as well as be designed to be a truly ‘integrated’ campus with their UCL research partners (to deliver faster ‘from bench to bed’ eye treatments – that will have both a national and world-wide impact). We (Capitec) were honoured to have helped support this world-renowned institution defining their strategy for the next 5 years as the plan to move from an ‘analogue’ era estate to one built and designed to be ‘digital’ from the ground up. The new site will help Moorfields remain at the leading-edge of what is possible in eye treatment and medicine (including supporting their advanced stem cell research and treatments to use of machine-learning and using pioneering gene therapies)”.
